Sports are aplenty, from regular ones, to those which we find a bit more daring than the others. Some sports are pretty wild when it comes to the extreme that people are willing to go to compete. Take mountain biking, a rather dangerous sport on its own, especially if you take into account that people will actually be racing against one another.
What if the sport was motorized and the vehicles were much faster than what we could do with just our bodies? What about a sport such as MotoGP? Here is everything you need to know about MotoGP.
The Oldest Motorsport World Championship
This is an interesting way to start a history overview of a sport, but it is also a true fact. Motosports were all starting past World War II, and the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme was one of the first governing bodies to organize a world championship in motorcycle road racing, nowadays known as the MotoGP.
This is the short version of the name. The long version would be Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The first world championship was held in 1949, the same year when the FIM was also formed. It has multiple categories, MotoGP being the highest tier of motorcycle racing, at least road motorcycle racing. Apart from MotoGP, you also have Moto2, Moto3 and the more and more interesting, MotoE.
The Bikes – Every Young Person’s Dream
Everyone wanted to own a superbike at some point, or rather, a motorcycle which was built for MotoGP racing. However, these motorcycles are not street legal and are purpose-built for Grand Prix racing. This makes them more dangerous than regular bikes and should not be handled by anyone but professionals.
The regulations for the bikes changed over the decades, with any displacement from 250cc to 1000cc being available for MotoGP. Moto2 and Moto3 typically use smaller engines and understandably so.
Unlike open cars and enclosed cars, motorcycle racing is much more dangerous than racing in cars, the body being exposed to any crash and any hazard, your own or another racer’s.
The Safety Of MotoGP
Whenever you have people racing motorized vehicles, things are bound to be dangerous. When these races have the drivers going ridiculously fast and competing against one another and in total, 22 riders. The races get really dangerous as the bikes can go as fast as 220 MPH or 365 KMH. These speeds are comparable to Formula 1 cars, without the safety that one provides.
MotoGP has had incidents over the ages and it is accepted that as a motorcycle sport, it has more risk involved than other motorsports that involve cars, for example. As such, MotoGP is one of the more dangerous sports in the world.
The Typical MotoGP Season
As with every sport, MotoGP also has a season. The season has several races, the 2022 season having 20 races. Every racer gets points if they place in the top 10. The point system is similar to F1, the winner getting 25, though the second place gets 20 and less for each place until number 10. The fastest lap also gets an additional point, provided that they are in the top 10.
In the end, a rider gets awarded the winner of the season, and so does a constructor.
MotoGP is the equivalent to F1, but with motorcycles, a dangerous and very exciting motorsport.
