Electric cars are definitely going to dominate the market, but the oil industry is really hard to replace, given that they have lots of money and those with lots of money want to keep the status quo.
Electric cars are a good choice in countries which have the infrastructure to support them, but those would only be richer countries with a well-developed economy and road system. Even some richer countries still don’t have a good charging network.
In time, there will be charging stations everywhere and electric cars will be able to stay “fueled” up for a longer time. There will be changes at some point to the battery and energy storage technology, meaning that we will be much more efficient when it comes to keeping our electric cars charged.
Hybrid is the More Likely Future
For now, hybrid cars are looking like the more likely future of driving. Gasoline engines for long-distance driving and electric engines for city driving. You save fuel both ways, given that the least fuel is wasted when you’re driving on a highway. With the electric variant, you don’t waste fuel in the city or when you have to do a lot of start/stop driving.
With that, hybrid cars are likely going to be the logical next step as we start to get used to electric vehicles.
Gasoline for Enthusiasts
The enthusiast market will always keep the petrol industry going. Plenty of people enjoy the sound of an internal combustion engine, its roar, not to mention the vibrations. It’s a very simple experience that people care about. The noise is part of the experience, and so is the smell of the fuel. It is very likely that a lot of internal combustion engine cars will be still in production for years to come, not to mention that the already existing ones will be driven, no matter the regulations and costs.
Enthusiasts are not likely to give up on their passion. Even with incentives and tax reductions, people still opt for petrol or diesel cars, just for the simplicity of their design (albeit modern cars are getting more and more complicated).
The electric car is likely going to be the mainstream vehicle of choice, however, when that is going to happen is another story. We are still in a period where cars with internal combustion engines are the highest priority and it is likely going to remain as such for at least a couple of decades more.
